About me

My formal education and background is in anthropology and I have been teaching in higher education for almost two decades. I retain a passion for students, instructing and experiential learning.  The field now includes a new specialization called anthrozoology which focuses on humans' relationship with animals, and one in which I am integrating into my curriculum.

Animals have always played a significant part in my life, directing important decisions including relationships, geographic destinations and adventures. For the decade leading up to my master's work, I was able learn about rescue and rehabilitation, first of cats, and then of orangutans (field work in Borneo).  Now my focus is anything equine.  I live on a farm with my horses and cats, bunnies, a resident bull snake, and a bobcat.   There are native and seasonal birds, including golden and bald eagles, turkey vultures, hawks, owls, meadowlarks, robins, doves, barn swallows, and a whole lot more.  We hear coyotes and foxes every night. Infrequent elk wander nearby, small herds of deer and I believe, mountain lions are also in the area.  I have made an agreement with them to take care of the land and animals to the best of my ability, in exchange for the safety of my cats and horses.

Our Story

I am supported in my work by my herd of horses and a global community of like-minded horse people  My herd includes Prince, a cremello-colored gelding, both sensitive and stoic, and our herd nervous system regulator.  Skye is our lead mare, a brown chestnut, off-the-track-thoroughbred, sensitive and graceful like no other.  Whisper is our herd protector, a black senior horse with a draft sized head who protects and gently leads the herd.   We have two boarder friends Willy and Rainee.  Dolly is our matriarch that graces us with her spiritual presence and also helps keep us safe and sound. We lost her last year at 36 years old.  And yes we see just how much Rainee resembles her.  Herd dynamics are important and each horse has a specific role within the herd contributing to their well being.

Life here at the ranch and our core values include a commitment to the three F's, (friends, freedom, forage) and a horse husbandry philosophy which includes the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional components, each important for the horse's well-being.  My experience benefits others in need of developing or expanding their current care routine and /or behavior issues that may be present.
